Bury St Edmunds oldest Inn?

Believed to be the oldest Inn in the town, the Fox escaped the ravages of the great fire in Bury of 1608 and has served as a hostelry since it was built in the 15th century, when it was just outside the old East Gate of the town, now depicted only by a sign to the front of the building.

Drovers arriving in the town could slake their thirst at The Fox, the animals meanwhile could do the same at the ford in the river lark opposite or from the water trough which can still be seen just outside the main entrance.

The inn once provided stabling for 100 horses for travelling folk, and its patrons were some of the last people in Suffolk to be amused by a ducking stool situated opposite on the bank of the River Lark. The landlord was deeply disappointed when it was finally removed in the early 19th century as it was a favourite past time of his customers to sup on local ale and watch as poor souls were ducked, sometimes to within a gasp of their life!

As a grade II* listed building of importance in the town, this has provided protection to Jacobean oak panelling and the impressive heavy timber frame.

About Us

Ron and Sheila Blackmore started trading at The Fox in April 2004. We have two sons and live with two cats, two dogs and a number of bantams in a village close to Bury.

Ron worked as a regional, marketing and trade quality manager for 10 years at Greene King before taking over the Fox. Sheila was a senior commercial manager working for a local charity.

Twenty years ago we were involved with The Cretingham Bell. It was great, we had regular live music and were one of the only places for miles around that you could get a genuine vegetarian or vegan meal.

Some people saw us as cranky as vegetarianism was quite a new thing, but we knew it was the start of something big! As vegetarians you can always be sure of interesting and genuine veggie dishes being available.

Our philosophy is to provide honest good quality food, which is organic where possible, served informally in a friendly atmosphere with good music.

Our business ethos is to have as little impact on the environment as possible.
